Chapter Fifteen
âLove knows not distance; it hath no continent;
its eyes are for the stars.â âGilbert Parker
After dinner, Max helped his mom with the dishes. âI have a favor to ask.â
âWhatâs that?â
âColton has convinced me that I should go to Houston to surprise Lexi, and I was thinking about doing that this weekend, but only if you wouldnât mind having Caden.â
âI wouldnât mind. Other than Sunday dinner, we have no plans except volunteering at the tree farm on Saturday. He can help us there.â
âHeâd love that. Heâs also got a couple of birthday parties.â Max had talked to Landon earlier, whoâd assured him heâd survive at the farm for a few days without Max.
âNothing we canât handle. Go see Lexi. I agree with Colton that itâs a good idea.â
Max glanced at his mother. âCaden told me he doesnât like her.â
âWhat? He barely knows her.â
âThatâs what I said, too, and we made a deal. If he gets to have his mom in his life, I get to have Lexi in mine.â Theyâd told his parents and grandfather over dinner that Caden would see his mom the following Wednesday.
âThatâs a fair deal.â
âItâs just been me and himâand all of you, of courseâfor his whole life. Things are changing for both of us, and Iâm not sure how I feel about that.â
âThat was bound to happen eventually, no?â
âI suppose, but itâs been a lot to process over the last few days.â
âWhen it rains, it pours.â
âThat sounds like a Gramp-ism.â
âI get most of my isms from him.â
Max laughed.
âThe one thing to remember about life is that change is inevitable, and itâs not always a bad thing.â
âI like things the way they are.â
âBut you liked having Lexi here with you, enough that youâre already planning to go see her.â
âIâm worried about Caden. He never says he doesnât like someone.â
âHeâll come around. He just needs to get used to seeing you with her.â
âPart of me wondersâ¦â
âWhat?â
âMaybe Iâd be better off just leaving well enough alone. Caden isnât happy about her, so it might just be for the bestââ
âNo,â Molly said forcefully. âHe does not get to decide whether you date or care about a woman or even bring a woman into your lives. Youâre a loving, devoted father to that boy, and heâs had you all to himself for his entire life. Itâs only natural that he might see her as a threat to the status quo, but heâll get over it.â
âWhat if he doesnât?â
âHe will. Donât you dare take a step back from Lexi because of what he said. Heâs seven, Max. If you start seeing her now, someday he wonât remember much about the time before she was in your lives. And knowing her as we do, I have no doubt sheâll make every effort to ensure his comfort around her.â
âAre you sure about that?â
âIâm very sure. Youâve given that child everything and made us so proud in the process. Itâs time to take something for yourself.â
Max hugged her. âThank you for always having the advice I need.
